Hillegass House is a nine-member 25-year-old collective in Berkeley. We began as a mostly single-parent house made up of six adults who wanted to share the burdens and joys of parenting. The age spread of the current membership runs from the early 30s to early 70s, with the median age being mid-30s to mid-40s, but we are open to members of any age.
Our home is stabilized with a long-term core group (one of our original members still lives in the house), but we've had several new members within the last couple of years including one baby born!
We are an exceptionally diverse group in most regards (i.e., interests, diet, spirituality, sexuality, employment, etc.). We blend together well perhaps because we balance a strong commitment and enjoyment to group living, on the one hand, with a willingness to work through group dynamics on the other. As well, we have a healthy respect for one another's privacy.
Other factors of our success? Well, it helps that we live in a lovely house that can accommodate our number quite comfortably. Dinners are shared, which builds connection. We have a large variety of gardening and creative projects and the space to do these in.
Written inquiries only. (We're sometimes slow in answering.)
