(Forming community)
We are a group of dynamic, socially conscious, active, older individuals committed to forming an elder cohousing community in the Chapel Hill area, which is in the Piedmont area of North Carolina, halfway between the mountains and the ocean. It is home to the University of North Carolina. Our vision is to be a vibrant, diverse, and affordable community that nourishes body, mind, and soul, and celebrates and harvests our collective wisdom and life experiences. We embrace living in harmony with the earth and a commitment to each other while continuing to grow mentally and spiritually, aging in community and caring for one another as we move with meaning and joy toward the end of our lives. We are committed to learning to live cooperatively together in the spirit of an informal, extended family, balancing privacy and community living, sharing time and fun together. We value honesty, kindness, generosity, humor, spirituality, and nonviolence. We support environmental practices that reflect an ecologically based lifestyle, including trying to incorporate “green” building into our development. We welcome as residents elders in the second half of life who share our common vision, without regard to gender, ethnicity, religion, familial status, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or political persuasion.
