International telephone numbers on directory.ic.orgFor communities outside the US and Canada, phone numbers are listed such that they can be called from any country. An example for a German community would be +49-(0)1234-56789. The plus sign indicates that one must start with your country's International Direct Dialing (IDD) prefix for any call abroad (011 is the IDD for the US and Canada). The next numerals (up to the dash) are the country code, which is also necessary for international calls (in this example 49 is the country code for GErmany). In parenthesis, you will find the National Direct DIaling (NDD) prefix which is the number one would dial within the country before dialing the actual phone number (in the US and Canada the NDD is 1 in Germany it is 0) and which is not necessary when dialing from outside the country. After that is the complete phone number including any area, region, or city codes. Thus for the above example, if calling from the US one would dial 011-49-1234-56789 but if calling from within Germany one would dial 0-1234-56789.
