| Riverside is an intentional community near Nelson, New Zealand. It is based on humanitarian, pacifist, socialist principles which determine our organization and structures. Our legal standing is as a charitable trust with the trust maintaining ownership of all land, buildings, vehicles, etc. Surplus income is donated to help others.
We support ourselves from the 500-acre property with diversified pastoral and horticultural farming, a cafe, a garage, joinery, refuge, and events centre.
Members work either inside or outside the community with all income going into a common pool from which members receive a graded allowance according to family size.
Decisions are made by consensus at the weekly meeting. We have no leaders or gurus. We share the common beliefs of nonviolence, justice, and equality to build peace. Spirituality is a matter of personal choice.
We have thirty-five residencies that are occupied members and their families or tenants. Membership is not restricted, and some assistance is given to those who leave. We live in family units within the community family; ages range from infancy to eighty-seven.
We celebrate six seasonal festivals based on a variety of out ancestral backgrounds. We also have music festivals every couple of years and have recently begun to celebrate some Maori ceremonies. | Community location is placed at the center of the zip/postal code, city/state, or city/country (not based on street addresses) |
