River City Housing Collective
Iowa City, Iowa,
United States
Our collective currently consists of three large houses close enough to walk to the university or downtown. We each pay a share slightly below the average cost to rent in the area but we are requiring each member to work a minimum of 16 hours a month for the collective. This work includes cooking, shopping, maintenance, management, meetings, and committees such as newsletter, education/cultures, membership, work credit, maintenance, and finance and development. We especially need individuals skilled in plumbing, electrical, and carpentry. We also appreciate skills such as cooking/baking, music, and teaching.
This is a consensus community, so we are learning about tolerance, teamwork, real-estate management, and group process. We interview people who want to live here as a group, usually over dinner, and then make a group decision on membership/boarding privileges.
If you live here you must like children, pets, and composting. Success is a process, not a destination. We need hardworking, friendly people who appreciate diversity.
