Redfield Community
Buckinghamshire, England,
United Kingdom
Redfield was founded in 1978, and now has 12 adult members and 7 kids. We share a Victorian mansion and stable block in 17 acres of pasture, woodland, gardens and orchards. The land and the ground floor of the house are communal, with individual units and rooms on the first and second floors. We don't income-share but we income-pool, as we are a registered housing co-op, and all members pay a monthly rent to the co-op (part per capita, and part floor space occupied). Members tend to work part-time in paid jobs, and are expected to put two days a week into Redfield. This could be in the garden, on maintenance, cooking, cleaning, admin, splitting logs (we have wood-burners in all our rooms), or looking after the animals (we have sheep, pigs, cats, chickens and bees).
We eat our evening meals together, and people sign up to cook (which means we each cook about once a week). We have weekly consensus decision-making meetings; no capital is needed to join; we are secular, and don't have a particular group philosophy, although we tend to have a “green” outlook--we recycle, our land is organic, we have solar hot water, compost toilets, eco-paints, and there is an environmental organisation called LILI based here (in the stable block), which employs three members, and runs courses, provides information and undertakes projects and installations. We're also home to World Tents, a business selling tipis, yurts, and other canvas shelters. We are a WWOOF host, have visitor days and run Living in Communities weekends twice a year. We welcome enquiries about visiting and membership.
