North Mountain Community Land Trust
Lexington, Virginia,
United States
North Mountain began in 1972 as a rural commune. We have a beautiful piece of land: 130 acres, mostly hilly woods, about 10 of it tillable. We are located in a valley encircled by the ancient Allegheny Mountains.
The commune continued with many comings and goings through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s. As our membership grew older and most began having families, the need for individual housing grew. In 1990 we changed our structure to that of a land trust. The land is owned by the community with members having lifetime leases to individual two-acre plots. Homes are owned by the members. There is a work commitment each month as well as a monetary one. We have meetings monthly, potlucks regularly, and labor exchanges among us.
We now consist of seven members, four homes, various dogs, cats, chickens, a barn, a shop, and a granary. We do some gardens together, others individually. We have hopes to grow in the future but no desire to grow too quickly or too large, remaining at six to eight households at most.
If interested, please write to schedule a visit. We want to ensure that you know us, we know you, and we all know what's involved when we join together in the dance of community living. Come dance with us at North Mountain Community.
