| Detroit Cohousing announces a major setback in making cohousing a reality in Detroit for two reasons: 1. The CDC we have been working with does not currently have the capacity to proceed with the purchase of the land and building that they originally made an offer on for the cohousing development. 2. There seems to be no money available for loans, and those already owning homes who would need to sell them in order to purchase in the cohousing development would have to accept much less than what their houses were originally worth. We have had conversations with other area CDCs, and we are hopeful that the project will soon move out of its stalled status. It is still our desire to build in the area we describe here:
The site is central to a thriving neighborhood of new and older single-family homes, a senior citizens’ cooperative, and new condominiums. It is adjacent to a neighborhood park and community garden, and is within walking distance of Mexicantown restaurants, grocery stores, a city recreation center, community theatre (Matrix Theater Company), and the new Mexicantown Welcome Center. It is near major bus lines to and from downtown and should provide easy access to the west side of the Detroit Riverfront Walkway when it is completed. The spires of St. Anne’s Church, a Detroit landmark for those crossing the Ambassador Bridge from Canada, rises above the neighborhood. We want to make our cohousing community as diverse, green, and affordable as possible. | Community location is placed at the center of the zip/postal code, city/state, or city/country (not based on street addresses) |
