Roberts Creek Cohousing
Roberts Creek (Sunshine Coast), British Columbia,
Canada
Roberts Creek Cohousing is the first purpose built, rural cohousing community in Canada. After 5 1/2 years of plotting, planning, sweat, tears and approximately five hundred meetings we began construction in late 2003. All 31 homes were occupied by Dec. '04.
Our community is home to a rich diversity of adults and children from Canada and elsewhere (USA, U.K., South Africa, with children from Guatamala and Tajikiistan). Currently we have approx 50 adults ranging in age from 18 - 83 and 28 children from 2 - 18.
Our site is 20 acres, with the buildings occupying 9 acres. The houses are mostly single family homes with some duplexes. We share a small (so far) community garden and a workshop.
We have a large common house that is central to the physical and emotional heart of our communty. Since the common house was finished in June '05 we have been sharing regular community dinners together (twice a week so far).
Now that the hardware is in place we are beginning to focus more on the work of creating honest and authentic connection. It's not always easy, however most members are committed to learning. Our most recent learning was a two day workshop about the Compassionate Communication (NVC)model. Out of this workshop came two NVC study groups.
Our other main focus is to generally have a good time.
