Amata Community
Atlanta, Georgia,
United States
We are in Atlanta's most vibrant neighborhood. Only four miles away is downtown; one mile away is Atlanta's biggest alternative business district with a huge natural-foods co-op. Within one-half mile are a 50-acre city park, a 16-mile-long off-road bike trail, a subway station, and numerous bus stops. Two blocks away are shops and restaurants. Sidewalks, trees, and greenery are very abundant throughout the area. Next door to us is Lake Claire Cohousing Community.
Amata is on a gorgeous, hilly, 2-1/2-acre plot with organic gardens, fruit orchards, solar well, farm animals, ponds, sauna, fire circles, outhouses, playgrounds, picnic tables, and a playfield. We have two permanent common houses with a common kitchen, bathrooms, five bedrooms, living rooms, and a 20 x 35 foot indoor recreation/dance room. We also have three less-permanent buildings with five bedrooms and a modest but well-stocked workshop.
People who visit here remark how it has a country in the city feeling. They are amazed at how much greenspace and gardens we have for an urban location.
We have 4 core decision makers/owners and 10 residents with some decision power. Owner status is usually based on a purchase of a building lot or home. Most residents are renting. Our rents are affordable, and numerous jobs are available in the surrounding area.
Amata's residents are varied in sex, religion, diet, race, career, education, etc.
Visitors are welcome, those who wish to stay overnight must contact us and we cannot always offer accomodation. But if you contact us a week or more in advance then we can probably make arrangements.
We are not bound by a central philosophy or doctrine. People in our community are generally free to live as they choose.
For fun there are various neighborhood potlucks that happen as well as drum circles and other musical events. We have a few festivals a year on the neighboring Lake Claire Land Trust. Atlanta also plenty of teahouses, art galleries, and other places to relax.
Atlanta itself is generally liberal and there is a fair amount of alternative things happening.
We are committed to community, ecology, and health and welcome others who share this commitment.
