The Zion UCC Intentional Community
Henderson, Kentucky,
United States
The Zion UCC Intentional Community is located in Henderson, Kentucky, and is related to the United Church of Christ (UCC). The Zion Community is a UCC congregation of 80 members. Zion UCC, organized in 1871, was once a dying church, when in 1992, it was reconstituted and revisioned as an intentional community.
The Zion Community places particular emphasis on intentional relationships with God and one another, community prayer, common meals, living joyfully, welcoming strangers, consensus-styled decision making, and shared responsibility. The community is located in an urban-related suburb of Evansville, Indiana. Although members live in their own housing, a particular emphasis is placed on living in the immediate neighborhood, even though many members live a considerable distance from the community's center. Because of the strong social commitments of the community, Zion is regional in nature.
The Paff Haus now houses the offices of New Beginnings, a non-profit agency that works with victims of sexual abuse. Plans are to lease other available space in Paff Haus to non-profit social agencies. Members are committed to being a Just Peace Church, An Open and Affirming Community,an Inclusive Language Church, an Environmental Justice Covenant Church, a "Bread For The World Covenant Church, and are committed to membership in Kentucky Jobs With Justice. Zion U.C.C. offers free space to a Narcotics Anonymous group, helps sponsor a monthly social gathering of developmentally disabled persons called "Funtastics",offers free space to a Quaker Meeting and regularly shares free space with like-minded non-profit groups. Peace with Justice Weekend: A National Gathering of Peace and Justice Activists is held each October and brings together some 150 activists, artists, musicians, writers, and religious leaders from across the country. Currently, Zion is in process of reforming its commitment to community and focusing on renewal of its vision.
