Gesundheit! Institute
Hillsboro, West Virginia,
United States
Gesundheit Institute is a group of healers, visionaries, and clowns building a healing community based on humor, compassion, generosity, and enthusiastic hard work.
Much more than a hospital, Gesundheit seeks to be a microcosm of vibrant life, integrating art, education, fun, and friendship with health care. Gesundheit's home is 310 acres in eastern West Virginia.
With many friends we have created a four-level multipurpose building, a five-level staff dwelling with onion domes, a three-acre pond, and a ton of friendships since the land was purchased in 1981. With collaboration of people from all healing arts, we are working to build an ecologically integrated community and state-of-the-art facility. Our vision includes a 40-bed hospital where good health is a laughing matter and "patients" and "caregivers" work and play together, and the spirit of community is itself the most potent medicine.
Patch Adams, founder, presently lectures and performs for caregivers around the world in order to raise awareness and money toward the further design and building of the Gesundheit community. The land staff stewards the property and hosts short- and long-term volunteers, visitor weekends, and an increasing number of educational offerings. How can you help? Please send a silly postcard and inquire about volunteering or bringing the Gesundheit vision to your own community.
In Peace!
