A riverside spot in Shangri-La
Since 1970, Gentle World’s founding members have welcomed people who wish to work together to realize our shared vision of a life that supports and reflects our highest ideals. We use the beauty of nature, sunshine and practical spirituality as tools in helping us to evolve toward living our core values, which include integrity, honesty, and cooperation.
In 1979, Gentle World became incorporated as a nonprofit educational organization, whose purpose is to help build a more peaceful society, by educating the public about the reasons for being vegan, the benefits of vegan living, and how to go about making such a transition, as we believe that embracing the vegan ideal is nothing less than humanity’s next evolutionary step and our greatest hope for real peace on earth.
In addition to educating people about veganism, we teach interested individuals about how to move toward a more sustainable, communal, self-sufficient lifestyle, including how to live more harmoniously with nature, other animals, and one another.
Everyone who works with Gentle World toward achieving our goals is a volunteer.
Our year-round headquarters is on The Big Island of Hawaii, where we welcome guests as well as WWOOFers, when needed. North Kohala is a beautiful area, with clean air and lovely surrounding countryside. We have a large vegan-organic garden where we grow much of our own food, teach others how to do the same, and offer free cooking classes, consultations and meals to those interested in transitioning to a healthier, more peaceful way of living.
We also own 450 acres of magnificent New Zealand countryside, which we call Shangri-La. The land is situated in a private valley, with two pristine rivers. Here is where we accept WWOOFers, each summer season (from November-May) to help lift Shangri-la up to its name, which includes the planting and maintainance of hundreds of fruit trees, lots of flower gardens and several veganic vegetable gardens.
We welcome correspondence with people who are inspired to contribute toward building a gentle world or are interested in learning more about our mission and activities.
