| Ananda Kanan is a spiritually oriented, self-sustaining rural-development project. It is owned and operated by Ananda Marga, a meditation/yoga/social-service organization. It serves both as a facility for group retreats and as a model for spiritually based community development. All residents living on the property are members of Ananda Marga, and all practice vegetarianism, yoga, and meditation. A monk of Ananda Marga is the project director.
Future plans include a bakery, a school, children’s home, seed and plant distribution, beekeeping, etc. Classes in yoga and meditation are taught, and special events happen year-round--like alternative spring break and yogafest. Ananda Marga holds semi-annual retreats there, and other groups (Quakers, etc.) rent the facilities for their gatherings. Visitors are welcome to join in daily meditations in the beautiful sanctuary. There is a lake, a hiking trail, and acres of fields and woods of the Ozarks. We wish to help create a universal human family living in close cooperation with all of creation. "Anandakanan" means "garden of bliss."
