Chicken Shack Housing Cooperative
Gwynedd, Wales,
United Kingdom
(Wales/Cymru)
Chickenshack is a fully mutual housing cooperative registered in December 1994. We moved into our first and so far only property here in North Wales in August 1995. We are six full-time members and between us we manage five acres of land and four dwellings, working to an ever-evolving permaculture-inspired design. Co-ops are part of a grand tradition of democratic and social institutions that provide a useful and often more sustainable alternative to private ownership.
We work toward an energy efficient and sustainable home; this includes a solar and biomass heating system, an organic veggie garden and forest garden-style orchard. We also manage a meadow, a small woodland and willow coppice, as well as a natural wetland.
We have a growing interest in low-impact and eco-tourism, as well as running courses utilizing the facilities here teaching about permaculture and related subjects. We are now developing our own in-house annual permaculture design course.
