| High Wind began in 1977 as a non-profit dedicated to modeling technologies for sustainable living and exploring higher consciousness. An intentional community formed in 1981 on 128 rural acres, supporting this work. Though the close-knit community aspect was dissolved in 1992, the educational thrust continued-sharing ideas through workshops, seminars, conferences and tours-particularly in conjunction with several colleges, universities and central city school systems. Then in spring 2000 the direction changed again. Most of the programs were suspended, except for ongoing public demonstrations of renewable energy in the High Wind residences. A core of community people remain on the land as an 'eco-neighborhood' with the same philosophy that sparked our work initially: 'To walk gently on the earth, to know the spirit within, to hear our fellow beings, to invoke the light of wisdom, and to build the future now.' High Wind has sold its public buildings to two Buddhist groups very much on our wave-length; they plan to use the facilities and land for group retreats and teaching. With this additional influx, the total number of residents living in loose community has risen to 20, about as many as were in the intentional community previously. The High Wind Association is using the proceeds from the sale of the buildings to become a granting organization, growing a fund to support like-minded groups committed to building a sustainable world, and to sponsor periodically some programs of its own. The three founders of High Wind still live on the land and occasionally participate in seminars and workshops. They welcome inquiries and visitors looking for information or guidance in starting their own communities and with interest in sustainability broadly defined. They maintain contact with many in their former national and worldwide network.
