Zuni Mountain Sanctuary
Ramah, New Mexico,
United States
Zuni Mountain Sanctuary is a Radical Faerie community dedicated to providing an environment for spiritual growth and renewal of its stewards, Radical Faeries, and those of like minds and spirits. The Sanctuary is situated on a land trust of 320 acres in the Zuni Mountains of western New Mexico.
The Sanctuary is home to six resident-stewards who maintain the Sanctuary and are devoted to promoting a sustainable life-style, based upon principles of Permaculture and Holistic Management. To this end, the stewards are responsible for land and water conservation, organic gardening, recycling efforts, solar powered electricity, passive solar heating, and the like.
The stewards possess a variety of skills including, but not necessarily limited to - handcrafts, storywriting, computer art, building construction labor, gardening, water catchment, desert landscaping as well as cooking and general housekeeping.
Each of our buildings have used traditional techniques including adobe, pressed brick, straw-bale, and cob construction. The Sanctuary’s indoor facilities currently consist of the Common House, a large building holding the kitchen, library, lounging and meeting areas; Tea Rooms and Juniper House, residential facilities and indoor gardens, The Studio is an activity center for performances, presentations, meetings and workshops. Shower facilities include various wash areas in the Common House, and in the spring and summer an outdoor, solar shower facility.
The Sanctuary hosts a number of small, mini-gatherings throughout the year, some coinciding with other events in the area, while others commemorating holidays or astrological events. The annual Qweer Shamanism Gathering is held in August. This gathering generally brings over 100 visitors in a ten-day period. Where we explore spiritual aspects of the sacred in a variety or rituals and forms.
Visitors may camp during the warmer seasons (generally late May through late September), and are provided indoor space during the cooler months. Visitor donation request is to contribute ten dollars per day to offset food costs, however, all activities at the Sanctuary are offered on a “nobody turned away for lack of funds” policy. We ask from each according to what they are able, and to each what they need.
The Sanctuary is an omnivorian and gender inclusive community that fosters repsect and honor individual nature and the diversity of our shared humanity. We are open to visitors year-round. The off-season is a time of simplicity but can also serve as a time for reflection of self and the creative process. We ask a declairation of intention from those wishing to spend time with us, so you can have greater definition to your time here. Also how we may serve our visitors better.
