| Molino Creek Farming Collective has two major goals: to foster community through collective living and to operate an organic farm on our 137-acre parcel on the central California coast.
There are nine separate household shareholders, comprised of one or two adults and their children. Some members work on the farm, and some work in nearby Santa Cruz in a variety of occupations.
Our group uses consensus to make all decisions. We meet regularly (once or twice a month) to discuss management of collective affairs.
The property is "off the grid" with no incoming utilities. Each household satisfies its power needs with photovoltaics/generators. Each member contributes money to maintain the five-mile road that connects us to the Coast Highway.
All residents at Molino Creek are shareholders; we do not have facilities for long-term guests. The principal cost of a share in the land ownership is about $130,000 as of 2006. A share entitles a family to occupy or rebuild a residence on the property, participate in the consensus process, and be part of the farm operation. Residences vary substantially in age, condition, and setting. The value of residential construction and improvements is owned by each shareholder, separately from the land ownership.
