Earthsong Eco-Neighbourhood
Ranui, West Auckland,
New Zealand
All of us in the Common House
Earthsong is New Zealand's first and (so far)only cohousing AND urban eco-neighbourhood community, located in West Auckland. The community is up and running with two formally organized shared dinners per week, and many informally organized potlucks, barbeques and gatherings in between. We have 32 homes on site, 31 of which are currently sold and occupied, with one ground floor apartment still to sell. This apartment is physically accessible, has its own private garden, and has two and a half bedrooms. We are a diverse community in age, occupation, and cultural backgrounds, giving us a rich social life. The Earthsong Community Trust is a non-profit organization that runs environmental education programs on site. in addition. Earthsong owns a block of land in front of our site and has formed a company called "Walk to Work Eco-Developments Limited," with the intention of building eco-friendly businesses there in a few years time. We welcome all beliefs and philosophies, but there is a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability. Ecologically sensitive materials were used to build the houses, and they are cooled in summer and warmed in winter with passive solar features. Permaculture gardens are all overthe common property and, with the orchard, supply much of the produce for common meals. We have an extensive rain-water catchment system and pond, and this plus solar water-heating provides most of our hot water. The community also has a state-of-the-art composting toilet with adjacent worm farm for use and display in the Common House.
