The mission of the Students’ Cooperative Association is to provide cooperative, affordable housing to college students in Eugene, Oregon. Founded in 1935, we are one of the country’s oldest student co-op associations. Our seventy student members live in, own, and operate three houses across the street from the University of Oregon campus. The Campbell Club and Lorax Manner accommodate primarily undergraduates, while the Janet Smith House is for graduate students.

We keep our costs down by buying our food in bulk, cooking our own meals, and doing most of the maintenance and all of the cleaning ourselves. We offer vegan, vegetarian, and omnivorous meals of mostly organic food. Members grow vegetables in our yards and tend a community garden plot in a local park.

Our houses run smoothly because of members’ respect for diversity and sense of community. Each week members are expected to perform approximately six hours of chores and attend a house meeting, where we use consensus to solve problems, allocate funds, and plan special events. Members also gather to host community benefits with live music and share their knowledge of bicycle repair, screen printing, and other skills. Because we have no landlord, members have the responsibility to keep the houses clean and in repair.

The board oversees all three houses, though each house has a great degree of autonomy.)
