The community from lookout point
Kahikatea Eco-Village is located in the northern suburbs of North Shore City, about 15 km north of downtown Auckland, New Zealand. Kahikatea Eco-Village is the second re-naming and restructuring of a community which has existed on this site since 1978. Consequently, the community started with a fully developed infrastructure already in place. The real estate of Kahikatea is owned by a New Zealand charitable trust, which has as one of its stated objectives the support of intentional communities and community living. The day-to-day activities at Kahikatea are orchestrated by a New Zealand incorporated society, which is composed of the residents of Kahikatea and which leases the land from the Trust. Kahikatea occupies about 18 acres in a small, secluded valley with two streams running through it. The surrounding bush-covered hills give the community a remarkable sense of isolation from the encroaching suburban development. The extensive infrastructure includes a central community building with large kitchen and dining area, numerous bedroom blocks, an automotive workshop, crafts buildings, garden areas, tennis courts, a hot tub, and an olympic size swimming pool.
Kahikatea has a unique lifestyle which could perhaps be summarized as "socially communal, financially independent". Each resident has a private room for sleeping quarters. However, all other facilities -kitchen, dining room, laundry, showers, workshops- are shared by all the residents. Residents of Kahikatea contribute 7 hours of labour a week and make a weekly board payment to support the community. This covers the land lease, utilities, maintenance, and the common food supply. All other expenses -clothing, transportation, medical care, education, etc. are the responsibility of the individual or family concerned.
There is no guru or central ideology at Kahikatea What is required of residents is the desire and ability to live harmoniously with others in a situation involving the sharing of most of the physical infrastructure of everyday home life. Over the past several years the population at Kahikatea has fluctuated between 20 and 30 residents. Since the facilities were built to handle a substantially larger population, (at one time there were several hundred people living here), Kahikatea is open to new residents; singles, couples, and families. As of August, 2007 the community is in a restructurinng phase. Please contact us by e-mail for infomation on current conditions.
