| We're a group of (mainly) medievalists and permaculturists who formed a cooperative in 1992, with the objective of building a medieval village in which our members could live and work. Our property is near Yass, just north of Canberra, Australia. We adjoin the Hume Freeway, the major road between Sydney and Melbourne.
Our residential area will be under community title, where you own your house lot and have a share in the common land. Houses will have to be medievally inspired and environmentally considerate. We're planning to use composting toilets, and we'll have reed beds for gray-water recycling. Our plans also include a camping area with some visitor cabins; these will be used for medieval events and at other times by community groups.
We're also planning a reproduction of a small, early-fifteenth-century French village, with a tavern, a great hall for feasts, a bakery, a teahouse and similar small shops. We'll use the village area for visiting school groups, for day visitors, and for craft workshops.
We anticipate that the village and camping ground will generate a certain amount of employment, to supplement primary production on site. We expect that many of our members will choose to work in Canberra, and with increasing telecommuting and a shared minibus we can reduce the environmental impact for those not working locally. | Contact: Phone: +61 2 6288-0743 Community location is placed at the center of the zip/postal code, city/state, or city/country (not based on street addresses) |
