Fite Fuaite - the Galway Sustainable Community Project
Galway, County Galway,
Ireland
Our vision is to create a small, purpose-built village somewhere in the West of Ireland, whose residents will work together to produce much of their own food and energy and build a strong, close-knit community. The village will be built and run in a way that is environmentally sustainable. It will have private houses belonging to or rented to each family unit, and common spaces and facilities owned by all where residents can cook, eat, work and socialise together. As well as residents working in the wider economy, the community will have a vibrant local economy. It will be based on an ethos of equality and inclusiveness, and will be committed to educating itself and raising awareness about ecological and community living.
Core principles:
Environmental sustainability and low ecological impact – through appropriate technology, shared resources and facilities, organic growing, and good design.
Conscious commitment to community – encouraging real interdependence and connections among people, through the physical design of the village, shared group activities, and commitment to personal development and the sometimes hard work of living in community.
Participatory democracy – ensuring that everyone has an equal say in decisions, through consensus decision-making and non-hierarchical structures.
Accessibility and equality – striving to make the group open and welcoming to people from all backgrounds, abilities and walks of life; by removing barriers to joining and to full participation in the group, and by supporting members as much as possible to participate and contribute. Equality ethos among all.
Supporting the local economy – meeting our basic needs by sourcing food (etc) locally, where possible, and producing ourselves what we cannot source locally.
Education – continuing to educate ourselves about ecological and community living, and passing on what we learn to others.
Interaction with the wider community – keeping our village involved in and open to contribution from the wider society.
