Oakwood Community house
We are a small intentional community in Durham, NC that provides internships for young adults to explore community living, sustainability, and service. In exchange for room and board, our interns volunteer part-time at local non-profit organizations. We engage in community living as residents sharing one house and as neighbors in a vibrant and diverse neighborhood. Additionally, we make intentional choices to lessen our environmental impact in our daily lives.
Each internship consists of a 20 hour/week volunteer position at one of our partner organizations. Interns are paired for the duration of the internship with one organization.
Interns live together with the permanent residents and owners of Oakwood Community. Each intern shares a bedroom with one other intern, and all other rooms in the house are shared space. We share meals, household chores and social life together.
At Oakwood community, we recognize the impact of our choices on the environment. We bike, walk, and use public transportation for most of our commuting. We aim to use as little electricity and water as possible, while still living comfortably. We recycle, compost, or reuse everything we can.
We raise rabbits and ducks for meat and eggs. We also cultivate a large garden where we grow some of our own produce. All community members help reduce electricity and water consumption, as well as participating in the day-to-day work of animal husbandry and gardening.
