Riverside Co-housing
Camden, Maine,
United States
Six homes on five acres within walking distance of downtown Camden. A wonderful and affordable place for children and adults to enjoy life.
Riverside has land for playing, gardens, orchards, workshops and studios. There's 500 feet fronting the Megunticook River. Swimming and hiking are a short walk away.
Riverside is a place for all ages to flourish. It’s like living on the same block with your friends, but without the street and cars in the way.
Mixed-use zoning permits the option to live and work on the same piece of land. A range of businesses and workshop buildings are possible.
In addition to private homes, there are common spaces which include, but are not limited to: a kitchen, a library, places for community events, and a large solarium to enjoy the winter sun or an informally shared cup of tea. Cooperative ventures and creativity -- sharing of ideas, tools, spaces, equipment, and skills -- are encouraged.
Clustered housing allows Riverside to be compact, yet also provides generous open space accessible to all. Parking is at the edges; the space between housing is car-free.
Community members are financially independent; each home with its garden space is privately owned along with rights to the common land and infrastructure. Each family has the privacy and autonomy they would enjoy in a traditional neighborhood.
Riverside is committed to environmentally responsible design. The homes are super-insulated and energy efficient. Homeowners have flexibility in designing their homes. Sizes range from 600 to 1,600 square feet with one to three bedrooms. An average home, including ownership in the commonly owned land and building space, will cost between $160,000 and $230,000.
  Status: land optioned
