Honolulu Housing Hui
Honolulu, Hawaii,
United States
Honolulu Housing Hui L.L.C seeks to create an affordable, ecologically-minded community in Honolulu that provides a vibrant setting for children and families to grow, promotes shared resources and responsibility among families and integrates Hawai‘i’s unique natural beauty.
Ohana:
In our community, we will focus on families, not things. The architectural design of our community will encourage families to relax together and children to play together. We will accommodate families as they grow and change.
We believe strongly in the sharing of physical resources so that families are not overburdened with storage requirements and spending for common items. An indoor-outdoor common space will be available for BBQs or potlucks, music practice, and childrens’ play. If finances permit, we would love to build a shared guest house or office space.
Ecology:
Ample green and outdoor living space is vital for our well-being. We will encourage sustainability through the use of solar energy, recycling and composting and the creation of a community garden. Our landscape design will integrate with the natural disposition of our site to minimize water use. Our homes will be open and breezy so that we may benefit from Hawai‘i’s invigorating tropical climate.
Affordability:
We will strive to make participation in our community as affordable as possible. Our target cost is $500,000 per family.
Self-Governance:
We will be a participatory community in which all families adopt roles as builders and caretakers of our community. All families will contribute to the construction and maintenance of our site, keeping it safe and beautiful.
