Asheville, North Carolina,
United States
(Urban & rural locations within 3 sq.miles of West Asheville)
Since 1996 with somewhat 'unintentional' roots, fortunity has been steadily evolving into a working model of an integrated community lifestyle. The vision is physically comprised of urban, suburban and rural properties -- 6 residential structures (18 rooms/apartments), 2 commercial buildings, potential farm & gardens -- all centrally located within a three square mile section of West Asheville, NC just a few minutes / miles from downtown Asheville.
Focalized around a future primary commercial hub in the heart of West Asheville's walkable central business district (called 'The Fortune Building', hence the name FORTune Urban commuNITY), we are seeking/building a core group of interdependent individuals living/working together to finish and promote a family of related businesses/projects.
It is the communication (in many forms) and relationships between the people, businesses, and the structures in which they are housed which forms the essence of our vision. Finding out how people either independently or collectively solve the inherent problems associated with modern urban American life is the challenge. Honesty, productivity, creativity, and fair trade are the primary tools being used to achieve this goal. We also believe that personal integrity and emphasis on a healthy & balanced lifestyle remain the foundation from which mutual trust can be built and financial/emotional/spiritual growth can most easily occur.
We tend towards lengthy and intensive discussions, and usually seek to apply the results in productive fashion. After fifteen years of more private experimental incubation, we are now ready to engage the greater community more publicly. We are currently reorganizing and fundraising, repairing residential housing, renting rooms to non-members, and preparing to engage the businesses/projects more substantially at some point soon. Check out our evolving website for more info, and to schedule a visit or tour. Please note: we are not traditionally pet or substance-use oriented.
