Casa San Carlos
Sacramento, California,
United States
An 8-10 person household built around principles of community, synergy, and fun. We’re a happy, driven, lefty, reasonably neat, responsible, thoughtful, together, group of people who enjoy sharing a home, food and good times with one another.
The location: The vibrant transitional Oak Park neighborhood in Sacramento.
By bike:
4 minutes to Old Soul cafe
5 minutes to UC Davis Med Center and UCD-UCDMC shuttle
9 min to the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op
9 min to light rail
10 min to midtown (the close side)
15 min to the American River Bike Trail and California State University, Sacramento
The digs:
The main house is a 1923 three-story Craftsman, nestled among big sycamores and a venerable old avocado tree (that may still produce a few if we do our avocado dance in the fall). There’s a front porch across the whole front of the house, good for sipping lemonade in the spring and watching the neighborhood go by, and a basement below for bike parking, tools, etc. Behind the house is a huge 625 square foot mostly finished, pellet-stove heated garage space (feels more like a big common space with a wall that opens to the backyard than a garage, really) good for art, crafts, making music, bike repair, etc; it opens up onto the patio and backyard for warm weather wonderfulness. Hidden away behind that, just for fun and mystery, is a crazy little secret brick hobbit house, complete with tiny (though not necessarily usable) fireplace, skylights, and electricity, that someone built here years ago. There is a good bit of sunny space for gardening. We have a front-loading high efficiency washer/dryer, good internet, and all the basic stuff.
There are a range of rooms of all sizes:
One at $275 - 72 square feet, but really nice windows!
A few at $400 - ranging around 150 s.f. + big closets with windows, and views out into the trees
Two at $500 - (1) 25x11 with its own pellet stove heater, (2) 16x24 plue two 6x15 closets (or offices if you prefer).
We each shop for $120 worth of yummy healthy vegetarian food for the house each month. Utilities are approximately $50/month/person. The house is fully friendly to both queer and straight folks. We’re are committed to communicating well with each other, including participating in house meetings once a month or so.
Our house is social--somewhere you’d feel comfortable having a friend drop by for a spontaneous bite to eat--and simultaneously a sanctuary where you can always find some alone time in your room or on the porch or in the backyard or the big space out back or the hobbit house. We’re not a party house, but we have regular potlucks, and maybe a big happenin’ party (complete with mega disco ball) once or twice a year.
