| In 1920, Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi, came to America to bring the science of Raja Yoga to the west. He was sent with the mission to show the essential unity of all religions which can be experienced by all people who practice inner communion with God. Yogananda also came to teach the “Original teachings of Jesus Christ” and the “Original teachings of Bhagavan Krishna”. The cornerstone of his teaching is the Kriya Yoga meditation technique for God contact and the application of yoga principles to all aspects of life.
The Anandagiri Sangha is a spiritual family dedicated to living and sharing the life and teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda. It was founded by Swami Vijay, a disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda since 1969. It has been Swami Vijay’s good fortune to receive his training since 1972 from Swami Kriyananda, one of Yogananda’s foremost direct disciples.
In 1968, Swami Kriyananda started a group called Ananda. Kriyananda and Ananda Sangha (www.Ananda.org) are known worldwide as the leading disseminators of Yogananda’s teachings. With 8 communities in America, Italy and India, comprising of about 1,000 full time residents and many thousands of participants, Kriyananda has truly brought Yogananda to the world. His books, music and lectures (many are posted on Ananda Worldwide’s Channel on Youtube and Ananda.Org) have touched millions of lives.
It is the most natural thing in the world that a spiritual family would have children. Swami Vijay has been raised and molded as a disciple by Swami Kriyananda. In an effort to honor and share the value of that relationship with others Swami Vijay started Anandagiri. It is a group that is both independent of Ananda and vitally connected at the same time.
In November of 2009 Swami Kriyananda created a new renunciate order which he explained in his book A Renunciate Order for the New Age. This new order is open to all spiritual aspirants and includes stages of commitment for single people and couples. Members of the Anandagiri Sangha live by the precepts that guide the Nayaswami Order (Nayaswami means new swami - which means that this swami order is a new expression of the ancient swami order in India) and are encouraged, but not required, to join the order.
Currently Anandagiri has a Temple/Ashram in Las Vegas, Nevada, and a rural campground/retreat and monastery (under early stages of development) near Temple Bar, Arizona. | Contact: Links: Anandagiri: A description of our group and activities.
