| We have been looking for properties since last August and we are delighted to say that we have found a wonderful smallholding in Pembrokeshire, West Wales that we think would really meet our needs. It has about 40 acres of south-facing land, including woodland, a stream, a sizeable farmhouse and outbuildings. There is enough existing accommodation for founding members to move in straight away plus plenty of suitable land for eco-dwellings to be constructed later on.
The price of the property is reasonable, the owners are keen to sell to us; but the challenge is we don’t have quite enough capital so at the moment we are looking primarily for people with ready capital, perhaps having sold their previous houses.
We envisage most of the community members or households will eventually have their own dwellings, though some will continue to live in the house. The majority of the land will be worked communally to grow food with provision for individual plots if desired. We want to spend quality time in the natural world, being connected to the seasons and the elements and working with our hands to produce as much of our own food and energy as possible. We also want to create, using permaculture principles, land based business opportunities whilst recognising that some members will have part-time work offsite. The location is excellent for public transport links and we believe there’s great potential for income from camping, eco-tourism, workshops and events.
We see living in community as a way to share resources (particularly the land itself), work, emotional support, honest and open communication, friendship and celebration, as well as having time and space to ourselves as individuals and families. If you share our vision and have a serious commitment to living in community as soon as possible, we would be delighted to hear from you.
As mentioned we particularly need people with capital. However it is important to us to have a diverse and intergenerational group of members, so we would also welcome enquiries from people without capital but the ability to pay rent and to contribute fully to the formation and growth of our community. We look forward to hearing from you.
