 CAMERATA
COMMUNITY 55
PORTLAND
Camerata Community 55 will be an intentional community dedicated to life long learning and independent living. The Prime of Life community will be formed and defined by its founding members around the themes of intellectual and cultural pursuits including healthy lifestyles and community engagement. Camerata Community 55 will house a community library/reading room; a screening room and performance center; a community cafe and culture center.
Camerata is the name sake of the Florentine Camerata. The Florentine Camerata was a group of humanists, musicians and intellectuals in the late Renaissance who gathered to discuss and guide trends in the arts, especially music and drama. The members of Camerata Community 55 will gather in the tradition of the Renaissance – in a phase of time unparalleled for the devotion of mind to meaningful reflection and to the creation of new modes of understanding.
Camerata Community 55 is intended for those residents whose love of teaching and learning is a primary reason for community but not the sole reason. The community is intended to be interactive and engaged with the surrounding community according to the interests and beliefs of the individual members.
Camerata Community 55 will be located in SE Portland at the intersection of SE Belmont Street and 38th Avenue –in the Belmont neighborhood close to many unique shops and restaurants. It has easy access to Portland's Cultural District and to Portland State University which houses one of the nation’s renowned learning programs for non-traditional students. It is also a short distance from Reed College which is well known for its numerous chamber music events. It is close to many performance venues including the Portland Opera, the Symphony and jazz clubs.
Camerata Community 55 will encourage environmentally responsible life styles. The structure will be environmentally sensitive to the fullest extent possible while maintaining its financial independence from tax credits and other government incentives that deplete funds available for affordable housing programs. It is the intent of the developers to create a project with an affordable price point but not a project that creates luxury at the expense of those who truly need and deserve taxpayer assistance.
The Camerata campus will contain eighteen living units with full kitchens and two bathrooms. Each unit will enjoy a spacious bedroom and access to natural light and air. Camerata is not an attempt to stuff a residential community into an office tower. It is a scaled community designed roughly around the footprint of a co-housing community but with an articulated theme derived from the principals of the Renaissance. The ownership format may be a condominium but will differ in many ways from the typical condominium. Other forms of ownership can be utilized to achieve these goals which must be coordinated with the financial resources and preferences of the community members.
Camerata Community 55 will be the lynch pin of several intentional communities, based on the ethos of teaching and learning, planned by Dansira Development, a development company whose mission is to redefine the opportunities for living in an intentional community for Prime of Life residents. The communities will comply with all Federal and State laws and regulations for 55 year and older communities.
We are seeking twelve potential founding members for this community to assist in the design of its campus, in the articulation of its mission, and in the formulation of its governing documents. We hope that you may be one of those members.
