 The Burrow House Code
This is the Burrow House Code, or in other words, our collective house's manifesto, raison d'etre, our vision for ourselves so that our collective
can outlast any of its individual members. It is a living document and subject to change as the house changes, but will be used to guide new members to the house and in our selection process as we decide who will live here in the future.
The Eliconia House Code
The Burrow is a cooperative living environment in Boston, Massachusetts. While the members of our co-op have different backgrounds, interests, and lifestyles, we share common values and a code of conduct.
* We respect the inherent worth and dignity of all people, regardless of race, gender, age, religious or spiritual identification, sexual preference, etc.
* We live cooperatively in order to minimize our environmental impact and the use of natural resources. In other words, cooperative living means
sustainable living.
* We respect and promote each other's rights to physical, financial, and emotional safety and security, as well as a clean and comfortable home. Every Burrower does their share of the work, and is ready to lend monetary
and emotional support when it is needed and in their power to do so.
* Burrowers work individually and as a group to make positive change in the world around them. We make our house available for benefits, performances, meetings and events, and engage wholeheartedly in activism and the arts.
While Burrowers are welcomed and encouraged to support each other's endeavors, we understand that people have busy schedules and different
interests. Members will never be judged or criticized for not participating
in a particular event or activity.
* In a society stricken with prejudice, hate-based violence, and myriad
forms of social and economic injustice, we seek to create and maintain a
space that is safe for everyone and free of oppressive attitudes, language,
and behavior.
* The Burrow is more than an oppression-free zone, though. The purpose of our
space is to counter oppression, and Burrowers make a conscious commitment
to combat oppression through our words and actions, events and community
outreach, and the living environment we help to maintain.
