Anarres Two Cooperative Community
Nagoya, Aichi,
Japan
(proposed community, not yet established)
Anarres Two at this point is just an idea for an intentional community which would be dedicated to voluntary cooperation of a socialist/anarchist variety, with the goal of illustrating by example an alternative way of organizing human society.
Organizational ideas:
- The main idea is that instead of competing, people should cooperate to meet their needs.
- However, there needs to be a balance between the good of the community and the rights of the individual.
- Although the primary economic focus should be on meeting our own needs instead of competing in the general economy, we will likely need to use whatever talents members have to produce income, or produce a product/provide a service needed in the area in order to earn money to buy goods and services we can't produce/provide ourselves.
- Members choose how many hours they want to work and what they want to do.
- Cooperatively earned hard currency income is pooled and divided by total number of hours worked (including “housework” and non-income producing communal work).
- Each member receives an equal amount per hour worked.
- Communal expenses are shared, personal expenditures are not
- Members can keep income earned in the mainstream economy minus some contribution towards community expenses
- New members make a refundable investment in the community (10% of liquid assets?)
- Decision-making by consensus, but failing consensus after several attempts, by majority vote
- No raising of mammals for meat (chickens and/or fish are ok)
- Community buildings are shared, but everyone is responsible for their own housing.
Ideal location:
- affordable land in a moderate climate that allows agriculture.
- country with affordable health insurance (preferably a public health system or public health insurance available), that respects human rights, does not engage in imperialism, and is multicultural and open to immigration.
- access to clean water or water that can be purified
- within walking distance of a town, or of public transport to a town, and the town has a train station
- a country with favorable exchange rate (i.e. a country where our investment capital is worth more)
- country where English is spoken (at least as an alternative language)
- relaxed zoning laws
- low level of corruption and crime
- moderate climate
- stable and healthy economy
Candidates include Dominica, Belize, Mexico, The Philippines, Mongolia, Greenland, the Falkland Islands, India, and Nepal. Other suggestions?

Visitor Process: There is no community yet, but feel free to get in touch by email.
Statement of Housing Non-discrimination:
Our community does not provide land or housing and is therefore not subject to fair housing laws.

Comment: If we decide to own land and buildings as a group, there would be no discrimination by race, gender, nationality, etc. but it would be assumed that people would share a broadly socialist or cooperativist political outlook

The name "Annares Two" comes from a community in Ursula K. LeGuin's novel "The Dispossessed". The inhabitants used to live on an earth-like planet that was plagued with wars and poverty. The two main power blocs on the planet were a capitalist society and a communist society, which were in constant conflict. A political activist led an anarcho-syndicalist movement on the planet, which aimed at overthrowing both systems and replacing them with an egalitarian, stateless society based on voluntary cooperation. However, in order to avoid a long, bloody conflict, the anarchists agree to relocate to a nearby planet, which is inhabitable but desert-like.

The name "Souchyville" comes from the name of the writer Augustin Souchy, who studied intentional communities.

The hope of this community would be to provide a "utopian socialist" (see Wikipedia) alternative to the world's current societies. Letting this community evolve gradually may be better than trying to launch it in its ideal form
