| The vision is to establish or join a small community/commune in Costa Rica (or New Zealand).

We would prefer an "open" and discursive approach to personal and community living over doctrines, ideas, beliefs that rely on absolute or remote truths and authorities for their justification. An approach to living that values encounters, presences, moments and experiments and that remains suspicious of absolutes, that, nevertheless, is able to question and discern.

We envision to incorporate a set of ideas derived from approaches to self-sufficient, sustainable, resilient, grassroots, co-operative, bountiful,"ethical" living that are open to discourse.

Suitable land would ideally be 5+ Hectares in size with close access to water and within 30 minutes from the Pacific Ocean.

Local, natural, non-toxic building materials, techniques and concepts like earthships, superadobe, cobb etc. could be explored.

Off-grid living with local electricity production and local water collection with on-site greywater treatment and compost or sun toilets could make the property independent of external life support systems. Permaculture, biodynamic etc. approaches to gardening would be explored and we could aim at a large percentage of food self-sufficiency. A permaculture fruit forest could be established.

A centre for learning and research could be established; a series of workshops, health/nutrition, responsible eco-tourism, art projects and further "cottage industries" could provide basic income. Some of these are already planned. However, money making is not a priority, but (unfortunately) to some extent a necessity.
...
Work and income share models could be established to provide for communal support as well as personal/household liberties. - e.g. 10-20 hours of work share per week in communal projects and/or 10-20% of income could be collected for community projects and costs of the trust that could collectively own the land, but provide titles to each household that would occupy around one acre of land each, the rest could be communally managed.

All of this can be discussed. A bottom line would probably be to have as little rules and "prescribed community" as possible, as many rules as needed, and as much "grassroots community" as possible to be able to provide for both, the needs of people and the needs of the community that are identified and decided upon collectively.

While we want to explore and focus on new and bountiful ways of living, we feel that we also need space to reflect on old ones and how they are related to hegemonic practices within societies as well as to our becoming and desires. In short, we perceive a need to reflect on and grapple with how we have become and the conditions that form our selves. We perceive (good) life to be a chautauqua, a work in progress, not just a function of our thought. We have a history.

We are from Germany, currently living in New Zealand, and are considering to move to Costa Rica - or other places - within the next 2 years and to establish or join a small and open community.

We would like to hear from people who share similar ideas and visions and/or may be able to assist in any way to turn visions into reality. |
