Community by the Garden in June
The roots for La Vida Juntos (Life Together) began in September 2006 when 3 AmeriCorps moved into what was then First United Methodist Church. First UMC was a small, majority white congregation struggling to rebuild post-Katrina. At the time, the church was a construction site with no hot water, no electricity downstairs, and very little security. In October 2007, it merged with Grace United Methodist Church, a majority African-American congregation that was also struggling to rebuild. The two churches became First Grace UMC, a joyful, diverse, and open faith community. As the church has grown, the members of LaVida Juntos have increased and with every new addition, this community has made for a more intentional way of living with one another. This has been a grassroots spiritual community, organically created by the community and for the community. In this community, we seek to hear each voice, and to hear each voice with respect. We are committed to justice, supporting each other, and being honest and open with each other. We strive to live together in a spirit of openness, love, and justice.
