Collectif Creatif du Castellas

Our community is now in a forming stage with 10 adults and 3 children since March 2012. There are openings for about ten more people.

We have purchased a huge building in Bessges,France (Gard) in need of a lot of work and we have begun to clean up seven years of mess and plant a garden.

We have weekly work days and organisational meetings every two weeks based on consensus.

Two members are camping on the site for now and other members will slowly move in as work progresses.

Our community offers living and work space for permanent members or only work space for active members. We also have simple and supporting members.

We plan to have a community kitchen with two meals a day and open to the wider community. We are searching for ideas to have a cottage industry. We will also be offering space for an artist residency. Private quarters will remain small and the community spaces will include a kitchen, a laundry room, bathrooms, library, two multi purpose spaces for exhibits,workshops meetings,theatre, concerts, office space for the association...

The founding members have created an association which owns the building. Permanent and active members loan money to the association while living and working within the community. If they decide to leave they will be reimbursed without interes within a delay of 3 months. Supporting members also loan money which enables us to auto finance the renovation. But we will also be looking for various subsidies. We have been able to purchase the building with membership loans so far. We do not intend to use bank loans.

Permanent and active members pay a monthly contribution to the association to cover expenses : food, water, electricity, insurance, taxes ...

And of course we intend to renovate ecologically : wood burning furnace, solar, natural insulation...
