*****
Haley House offers collaborative living and working environments that
BUILD communities and connections across the boundaries that divide us,
MODEL creative alternatives that confirm the intrinsic dignity and worth of each person, and
CHALLENGE the attitudes and structures that perpetuate suffering.
With a focus on reciprocal learning, we provide
Skills training for the underemployed,
Volunteer experiences,
Housing for the homeless and working poor,
Economic development opportunities, and
Wholesome nourishment for body, mind and spirit.
Committed to building connections with each other, our neighbors, and with the homeless and low-income people with whom we share regular meals, the Haley House Live-In Community is grounded in nonviolence, spirituality, simplicity, and social justice.
Community Members receive room, board, in exchange for our full-time commitment to Haley House. However, joining the community is much more than a "job." We often refer to ourselves as an "intentional" community, meaning that we not only live together, but are responsible to each other through weekly meetings, community meals, faith sharings, and daily life. In our collective decision-making we utilize the consensus process, and emphasize communication and mutual respect—values that we try to live out both in our personal lives and our work in the soup kitchen.
More than simply contributing to the day-to-day running of Haley House, the Live-In program stands as a witness to the value of community in a society of increasingly isolated individuals. By living simply and communally, and engaging intentionally with each other and our guests, we try to provide an example of what can be accomplished through sharing resources and valuing relationships.
