SelfDesign Learning Community
Sirdar, British Columbia,
Canada
Learning Consultants
Although we are primarily virtual in our network, we focus on family and community relationships. We encourage people gathering together in local areas and currently have 10 physical centers or circles of learners who meet regularly as a community of learners. SelfDesign is a new way of living with lifelong learning as the glue for intentional social relationships and conversation. We are currently an online community with about 2000 learners (k-12), over 2000 parents, 150 educators (learning consultants) and 400 support staff. We are spread over the entire province of BC Canada and communicate together in an online Village of Conversations. While most of our centers are in BC we are working with 2 learning centers in the US. In January 2012 the SelfDesign Graduate Institute will begin offering online courses out of Washington state. Although we are funded by the Ministry of Education as an Independent School we operate beyond the paradigm of schooling. SelfDesign is a new way of thinking about learning. The human being is the design that designs itself. We support each learner in designing their own learning path arising from their passion, curiosity and enthusiasm to learn and understand their world.
We have written a book called SelfDesign, that describes the growth of our community from one family to over 1000 families over its 29 year history. We have new ways of thinking about and working with learning that are based on the latest insights into human development. Individuals and communities around the world are beginning to work with us to start their own SelfDesign Learning Communities customized to meet the needs and interests of their group.
