Valverde Commons' View
Valverde Commons began as an idea among old friends and has grown into a new cohousing project for active adults 55 and older located in the heart of Taos, New Mexico. Twenty-eight energy efficient solar homes will be clustered on 10 acres surrounding a 4 acre common green space, plus an adjacent 10 acre park with walking paths and community gardens.
Our beautiful new common house has a full kitchen, large meeting room, library and laundry facilities. It is used for occasional group dining, parties, meetings, classes, entertainment. We also have a barn for communal garden tools, tractor, workshop, plus composting recycling facilities.
We want the freedom and privacy of our own homes with the feel of an old-fashioned neighborhood. As a group we participated in the planning of the site; we will each purchase our own lot and design our own homes-within guidelines of aesthetics and sustainability. Sharing joint responsibility for the common areas, we want to live lightly on the earth, using resources wisely and protecting green spaces for walking, gardening, and biking. Adjacent to Taos’s historical district, our land is within easy walking distance of Taos Plaza, the Taos library, stores, art galleries and restaurants. Valverde Commons spans a diversity of people of different backgrounds, incomes and viewpoints who want to live harmoniously, making the journey better for everybody.
Our residents will do much of the work around the place, as well as join in communal dinners and organizational meetings. While for now the leaders of the project have taken on the lion’s share of developmental, legal and financial responsibility, that is almost at an end. We are establishing clear, efficient rules and procedures for making decisions and resolving any conflicts.
We are committed to aging in place as much as possible. We are not health-care professionals, but we expect to be helpful neighbors, supporting each other physically, emotionally, and spiritually as we age.
We are over half sold out. Valverde Commons has four full-time families living on the land with at least three new houses beginning in the spring of 2012. All sites have access to town electricity, gas, water etc. We are accepting new neighbors now and would love to meet you.
