This is a chance I'm taking to meet like minded individuals. This intentional community would involve the absolute minimum of permanent structures, and would instead rely almost entirely on mobility-capable infrastructure. Using the term loosely, we would live in R.V.s.
For many years I have been planning and gathering supplies to build myself some "independence on wheels." There might be a live-aboard sailboat in tow. Contemporary houses, building practices, infrastructure, and the associated financial institutions support a wasteful life, and in my opinion, a life wasted. Coming from a mechanical/machinery operation background, living in an R.V. would be good, but probably not good enough for a long-term proposition. The vehicle I am building will have long-term infrastructure capability. The vehicle is not currently intended to provide complete independence from conventional technology; I recognize that some things like power and water and manufactured items come so cheaply and in such abundance to Canadians that I should not be hung up on absolute independence. Having companionship is another reason to not aim for absolute independence.
A current prospective location is my father's farm, east of Calgary. Water and power is available from existing outbuildings. Septic systems for units can be developed easily as the excavation equipment is owned and is on site daily. A large workshop is available for limited use. Ideally this location will serve to allow myself and other like-minded nomads to save money / time /resources, build units, and adapt to this way of life while we plan for a more inspiring base location or until our units are self-sufficient enough that we don't need a base location. However, a base location, such as one empty warehouse to dock many units in, may be ideal as it would be nice to have a secure place to leave your unit so you can go to university, or sail around the world, or participate in a protest against imperialism, or fly to Tibet for a sabbatical, or embark on wilderness survival training, or fly out to see your Aunty in New York, etc. This way your unit could be looked after by other members and it's systems maintained if need be.
We are going to have to have compatible personalities.
Drop-ins of passing units would be interesting in the future, but may not be practical until this lifestyle is somewhat established here by full-time users.
