Patchwork House
Louisville, Kentucky,
United States
We are a small urban community located in the historic Limerick neighborhood, near Old Louisville. We are a cooperative house, make decisions by consensus, and strive to be egalitarian. The house is a 3-story brick Italianate built around 1875. We have also purchased the adjoining empty lot and have transformed it into a subsistence/community garden. Once completed, there will be fruit trees (some mature ones already), brambles, bees, chickens, ducks, grapes, herbs, and veggies. We are trying to live as sustainably as we can in an urban setting.
As our vision states, we hope to become an inclusive, inter-generational space where people can joyfully learn and grow and build healthy and loving relationships. We also are working to support life and balance in the ecosystems we depend on by making what adjustments we can to our home and to conserve, reuse, and re-cycle resources. In addition, we seek to further social justice by supporting and partnering with local organizations. There is also importance in lifestyle activism, as some call it. We are actively seeking members and are especially open to people who are/could be interested in collaborating with the remaining founding member on a possible future transition to a cooperative farm.
This community experiment is still in transition as 2 of the original 3 owners have left. For part of 2010, the 3 founders practiced full income-sharing. Currently, we are back to being a cooperative house, sharing expenses and with a current population of 4. Several current members have a special focus on yoga practice and teaching.
