Presenting our Community at the Gathering of Communities
We are a community of 17 people--8 women and 9 men--who live in two differen apartment building near to each other in New York City. Three of the apartments are in the same building.
Our corps values are social justice and the Christian faith. Not everyone who has lived with us has been a Christian. We are members of several different churches in the city. Most of us were either part of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and/or a Vineyard Church at some point in our lives.
We have taken in people to live with us who have had no place to go. Many of us work for non-profits and do a large amount of volunteer work with the homeless of NYC. We have just moved to this neighborhood and are looking for ways to get involved in serving our community.
A group of us pray together and read scripture for about twenty minutes every morning and the women of our group meet every Monday night to share the events of our weeks and pray for one another.
All four of our apartment groups meet monthly for dinner and a time of prayer and worship.
We are very multicultural and include members from Tanzania, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Canada, the United States and Jamaica. We are of Korean, Latino, Chinese, Armenian and Western European descent.
Our apartments are located in Harlem at 145th and Edgecombe and 134th and Amsterdam. The community of girls is almost four years old. The guys community was formed one year later. We officially joined each other this fall, although we had worked together closely previously.
