New Talavana
Carriere, Mississippi,
United States
Our community, New Talavana, is a Hare Krishna ISKCON farm community located in rural N.W. Jackson County, Carriere, Mississippi. Our community was established in 1974. We are a dynamic spiritual community based on ancient Vedic traditions and Bhakti Yoga, or Devotion to God. We are located on 1,200 acres of beautiful rolling green pastures and forests. Our population of around 30 people is joined by around 50 friends and neighbors regularly for events, temple services, vegetarian feasts, and fun.
Our community's spiritual life revolves around our beautiful temple and beloved Deities. We engage in daily early-morning Bhakti Yoga practices including singing, chanting, dancing, and readings from sacred texts such as the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam.
Our community lifestyle revolves around Bhakti Yoga, or devotion to the Supreme Lord. This involves daily spiritual practices, chanting, reading of sacred texts, farm labor and living a fairly strict but mellow life. Our spirituality is bona fide and ancient going back over 5,000 years to ancient Vedic India. Our spirituality is very complex and profound and gives us much peace and joy and a deep sense of satisfaction. Our temple services can be very lively, full of sacred music and chanting, exotic drumming, ecstatic dance, and lots of play.
We live a very engaged life here. Work is diverse and includes cooking, cleaning, organic food growing, working with cows, land maintenance, small business management, building, office work, and outreach such as preaching and book distribution. Our facilites are simple but adaquete. Our housing for members is in need of development but we do have spaces available.
We are also an agricultural community engaged in cow protection, dairy production, and organic vegetable, fruit and nut production. We are self-sufficent for dairy and produce our own yogurt, milk sweets, and whey. We have right now around 1/2 acre in organic vegetable production, with plans for greatly expanding. We are also in the early stages of developing an ISKCON ecovillage community which will be striving for self-sufficiency and a more wholistic existence.
We are currently looking for new members and supporters. We have many single folks and also families here and would gladly welcome more. We are especially looking for young people interested in organic farming and ecovillage development. Please contact us and fill out our application if you are interested.
