Queer Ecovillage
Asheville, North Carolina, Formerly Gainseville, FL,
United States
(Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina)
 Call to Join, September 2010
Seeking LGBTQI and native 2spirit people to join in the formation of a queer/trans women-centered eco-community in the mountains of Western North Carolina.
Individuals and families with vision and commitment are needed now to guide the founding. We are creating an inventory of potential parcels.
The community is envisioned to be a feminist, multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-generational, affirmatively anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-homo & transphobic family friendly space. We share a long-term commitment to sustainable living, self sufficiency, social justice and a return to a healthy relationship with the Earth and all life.
We offer an alternative to urban migration of queer people by providing a non-urban "back to land" farm and wilderness-based space that can facilitate healing between people and the living Earth.
The proposed location are the mountains near Asheville, NC which feature a humid subtropical climate, abundant rainfall & groundwater resources. The progressive area & university towns provide cultural, academic, & research amenities.
Using green building, alternative energy, organic growing of food and resources, we can face the end of fossil fuels, water shortages and climate change. Our working farm community can remain abundant, adaptable, and alive learning and growing with the land.
An end to authoritarian and unjust systems, we envision a collaborative community based on openness, respect, and sincere mutual interest. We use consent-based meeting and decision making. We celebrate the freedom to choose partners, relationship styles and express our identities.
Tapping the special spirit of queer/trans/2spirit people, we express ourselves in art, performance, healing, innovation, and contributing hard work to both community-led and DIY (do-it-yourself) projects. We share joy and laughter with each other.
With the needs of the community in mind, we choose how and when to work, each to their interest, ability and pace. We share skills with each other. We create an economy that neither damages people nor the natural world around.
We provide a safe and sober community suitable to families and children. We build individual and co-housing. We choose our own diets with an emphasis on locally grown, organic and humane foods. We humanely raise farm animals and bees (apiary).
We welcome all spiritualities with special sensitivity in not appropriating or stealing spiritual/cultural practices of others.
