Zero impact inside – Positive impact outside
The need to live in balance with our biosphere is paramount to ensure sustaining a habitat for future generations to come. We feel we need to take responsibility as individuals and for our part would like to make a contribution. Our idea is to create a small self sustainable community at Lake Atitlan in Guatemala which can serve as a model and educational center for post modern living. This encompasses ecological housing, organic permaculture, zero impact energy production, maximizing the use of water and environmentally friendly waste processing. Additionally, in collaboration with a local NGOs, we would like to help improve conditions in that region specifically targeted to reducing/eliminating the pollution of Lake Atitlan that has been named “threatened lake of the year 2009” by the Global Nature Fund. For this project the first step will be to promote and make available the use of biodegradable detergents.
Also Lake Atitlan has been nominated as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The major advantage of such a project in Guatemala is the low cost of land, labor and materials along with a lack of building codes and beurocracy alongside living in the sacred land of the Maya.
We seek open minded balanced enthusiastic like minded individuals/ families who feel civilization as we know it has taken a wrong turn and would like to make the step to live by example. In Ghandi’s words be the change you want to see in the world. Obviously we have a long way to go as we are just acquiring the land for this project. Any skills that would be helpful to such a project are obviously most welcome but not mandatory.
