| Our Vision
Creekside Cultural Center is a gathering place based on the tenets of the Chautauqua movement - our mission is to provide educational, cultural, spiritual, and recreational programming for the broader community. About 20 people who live onsite work together to run the Creekside Cultural Center and an organic market gardening project. Family and pet friendly. We're working towards food and energy self sufficiency. We operate with modified consensus, and one no vote. No alcohol, illegal drugs, or tobacco is allowed on the property.
Our Land
We are located in Lenhartsville, PA, near the Appalachian Trail and Hawk Mountain. This is a small farm in the midst of a rural town, with a country store, two restaurants, post office, gas station and garage, small hardware store, a hairdresser and a butcher shop in 5 min walking distance. On site we have weekly concerts of all genres, open mic/jam sessions, an art gallery, boat building classes, preschool music classes, teen nights, and much more. There are three housing units, with several bedrooms and some small group space in each. Our property includes 1.5 acres of land, with creek access for boating, swimming and fishing, and a large market garden. 15 minutes to Kutztown University, about half an hour to Reading, Allentown, Bethlehem, or Easton, PA.
Finances and government
Housing fees are currently $400 per month per bedroom (includes utilities, use of all community spaces, gardens, and membership in Cultural Center) with shared access to laundry, bathrooms, and large and small group spaces of various sorts. 3-5 hours a week contribution to community efforts is expected from each resident over age 12, with lots of fun jobs to choose from. Additionally, there is some possibility of work exchange for some part of the housing fee, and/or some onsite work for pay, depending on availability. Potluck meals are held twice a week. One community meeting per month is required.
Opportunities
Anyone who is interested in learning more about the community can become a non-resident member, for a cost of $75 per family per year or 20 volunteer hours per year.
Available in August of 2009 will be a beautifully restored house with three bedrooms, which can be lived in by one family unit or several independent people/smaller families. You will be considered a full member of the community immediately, with all privileges, but you must live on the property for 3 years to be considered for shared ownership. | |
