Westport Cohousing
Westport, Massachusetts,
United States
Westport cohousing is actively developing a community of about 24 units, to be located in Central Village, Westport, MA. Westport is a colonial era seacoast town, on the Rhode Island border, with an ocean beach, abundant farm lands and woods. The town abounds with historic buildings and recreational opportunities. Our community is planned to be within reasonable walking distance of stores, town buildings and other cultural and social gathering places.
We are working to create a community that is affordable, inter-generational where all members, children and adults, will be encouraged to grow, both individually and as a group, while participating in the life of the larger community. A guiding principle of Westport cohousing will be sustainability (socially, environmentally and economically). The design and construction will include the state of the art energy conservation and local generation capacity and provide for easy physical access by all members.
We will invite active community participation (including outreach to the larger community), support each other's physical and emotional well-being, provide access to people of differing income levels and abilities, promote safety and security and encourage shared endeavor. The community will be planned and designed by us and will employ context-sensitive design, consistent with the colonial charm of Westport), and embrace a balance of private and community needs, including a common house with dining, working and storage areas. It will be designed to foster interaction and cooperation, as well as respect for autonomy.
