Yasnaya Polyana House
Indianapolis, Indiana,
United States
This is a Catholic Worker House being formed on the near east side of Indianapolis. The specific focus of the house has yet to be set, but some level of hospitality is pretty much a given.
The home has already been purchased. It will need some repairs, but is technically livable. If you don't know much about the Catholic Workers, please familiarize yourself with the Aims and Means of the Catholic Workers by accessing the site at www.catholicworker.org.
You do not need to be a Catholic (or even a Christian) to join the community. You do, however, need to be in basic agreement with the aims and means of the catholic worker.
Most Catholic worker houses have a specific focus. Since this house is in formation, that focus has not yet been set. Therefore, you have an opportunity to shape the direction of this house. If you have ideas, please feel free to contact us.

Visitors Accepted
Visitor Process: Give me a call to make sure someone is at the house, then come on by. If you are traveling long distance, it is wise to set up a specific time and date to ensure that your trip is not wasted. Also, as long as you don't mind sleeping in a sleeping bag on the floor or wherever else we can put you, you are welcome to visit and live for an extended time to see if this life is right for you. :)

Labor and Money
Financial Style:
Other
(catholic workers live in poverty. whatever we make goes towards the needs of the house and the community. but we're not nazis about it. if you want to put aside a little of your money for the future, no one is going to say anything. proceed at your own comfort level)
Open to Members with Pre-existing Debt:
Yes
(This community believes in the Jubilee provisions of Christ's message: your debt is cancelled)
Labor Contribution:
Expected
(laboring for the community at large (by which I mean those who aren't part of our little community) is the essence of the catholic worker)
Join Fee:
No
Regular Fees:
No
(you won't be earning much money. :))
Land and Buildings
Urban

Area:
0.3 acres (0.1 hectares)
Land Owned By:
Other

Food, etc.
Percentage of Food Grown:
1-5%
(There is room in the back yard for a small garden. also, my grandfather has a somewhat larger piece of land, and he would welcome all the gardening help he could get. =))
Share Community Meals:
Nearly all meals
(you don't have to eat with us if you don't want to, but meals will be provided)
Dietary Choice or Restrictions:
We all share a common diet
(since we're taking our meals together, we'll all be eating roughly the same stuff. i am a very good cook and you will be happy. like i said, though, you don't have to eat with us so if you want your own stuff, no worries)
Dietary Practice:
(i am not a vegetarian nazi, but moving down the food chain is a good practice for everyone. if a vegan would like to join the community and help me prepare more vegan oriented meals, that would be welcomed. a lot of my dishes are cheese heavy. =()
Alcohol Use:
Prohibited
(i don't mind going out for a beer once in awhile, but some of our guests may be struggling with alcholism, so it wouldn't be kind to have alcohol on the premises to tempt them.)
Tobacco Use:
Used Occasionally
(if you wish to smoke, please do so outdoors.)
Social Factors
Common Spiritual Practices:
Yes
(one does not have to be a catholic to be part of the house, but the house will seem fairly catholic, as catholic spirituality underlies the social justice teachings which inform the house's perspective. The house will welcome members of religious orders who wish to work with us, and other similarly catholic visitors. like I said, you need not be a catholic, or even a christian, but if you feel hostility in your heart for catholicism or for religion in general, you will probably not find this house to your liking)
Which Spiritual Traditions(s):
Roman Catholic
Educational Style(s):
Other
(this has not been decided, and will probably just be left up to the parents. if you want to send your child to a private catholic school, we will see what scholarships we can secure.)
