BTR Ecovillage
Dale (an hour outside of Austin, 15 minutes to Lockhart and Bastrop), Texas,
United States
(Our property is technically in McMahon, Texas.)
We are different from the majority of intentional communities in that we are not exclusive. The common theme of the group seems to be: "Do what you want, but do no harm." It does seem like a sort of synchronicity that the group has attracted such great people already.
Basically, we wish to live WITH the land...not ON it by keeping it as natural as possible. We wish to live with a close-knit group of people who are joined by the spirituality of Oneness... We are ONE with the land and with each other. We will squabble, we will complain on occasion, but in the end, we are family and take care of each other.
We wish to reduce our consumption of energy by relying on nature and technology to develop, pioneer, and adopt technologies that reduce energy consumption and reduce repetitive labor. In the long term, we'd like to create a place that has sustainable modern conveniences. Eventually we envision a 100%-renewable electricity grid.
January 2012 UPDATE: There is a lot of work currently underway on the land!
We are entering our 4th year and our farm, livestock, housing and land is starting to look like ( and function like ) a real ecovillage.
We recently bought another 4000 watts of PhotoVoltaic panels and are working on a new barn.
Our gardens are maturing, and we are starting to grow enough food we can visit farmers markets and share with our neighbors.
Our highlight for 2011 was getting out new pond dug, complete fencing of the property as well as new houses.
We hope to add several wells in the year 2012 along with a new barn and more rainwater storage.
BTR Ecovillage is not open to the public at this time, but we envision a time in the coming year, we might invite visitors to see what we have created as a community.
In addition, we are considering buying 10 more acres nearby and starting ANOTHER village... so if you are interested, send us an email and will will invite you to the discussions.
