Otway Farm
30 mins ex Geelong, Victoria,
Australia
A property in country Victoria is available for co-habitation and cultivation by a group of people committed to permaculture, simple living, creativity, science, and attachment parenting.
The property will support several families, and is commuting distance to Geelong and Melbourne. It would be anticipated that occupants would take the opportunity to work for themselves using the resources at hand.
Members of the community can live in their own temporary housing until such time as they are committed to spending a significant part of their lives at the property, at which time we can help each other build permanent structures.
It is expected that adult members will spend at least a day per week working to advance the lives of everyone at the property, and will have the rest of the time for their own endeavors and for achieving self-sufficiency.
There is at least 10 acres that can be farmed as a market garden, or members can have private vegetable gardens attached to their accommodation. It is expected that the farm will seek organic certification.
There is no fee to join. It is likely that we will want to share costs for some things, such as communications, and yearly rates. There may be other things that we purchase as a group, such as farming equipment or power systems.
Our first priority is to build a fire shelter, and community cooking facilities. We also need to establish food forests, vegetable gardens, and provide for livestock. In the long term, we hope for aquaculture, machinery workshops, sustainable forestry, and a wildlife refuge.
Ideally, members will be practitioners or supporters of attachment parenting and should be committed to nonviolence in general, and positive (non-punitive and non-corporal) discipline specifically. We expect new members to have working with children clearances, as child-care is a part of our daily lives.
Together, we will achieve a lifestyle that allows small group support for families and a pooling/better use of planetary resources. We intend to establish a non-school educational environment similar to that proposed by John Taylor Gatto, also incorporating ideas from universities and early bardic colleges.
Please contact us if any of the above sounds like the right thing for you and your family. We don't tolerate drugs or dangerous behaviour. We want minimum fuss and minimum red tape. An appreciation of Buddhism or science would be helpful, as well as a love of arts, crafts, and self-expression.
